Yankee Candle 2019 Scent of the Year Jar Candle Review- "One Together"

I can forewarn you right from the get go that this review is going to be a bit brutal on some points and may seem a little bit butt kissy on others.  Translation- my thoughts and feelings on this candle are a bit mixed.  :)

The first thing that I'm going to complain about with this candle is the fact that they don't allow you to use any discounts or coupons on it and it's a $30.00 candle.

Yankee Candle is notorious nowadays for... and I'm going to be blunt here... releasing crap candles that have scent when they are cold but release NOTHING when they are burning.  For some people, $30.00 is a lot to gamble when you are taking a chance on receiving a scentless candle and your intent is to purchase something that is going to scent at least one room.

I purchased this candle a few days after they were released on the webiste for purchase.  I grumbled when I put it into the cart but went ahead with the purchase because that's what I do.  I acquire crap to review it so hopefully I can help other people make up their minds as to whether or not they want to chance it with their own money.

I've ordered one more of these and one of the two wick tumblers to put back with my Yankee Black Band collection as a keepsake for some reason.

So... let's dive right into the listed scent notes.
  • mandarin
  • black pepper
  • nectarine
  • miracle flower
  • star jasmine
  • gilly flower
  • suede blush
  • sandalwood
  • amber
My first thoughts when reading the scent notes was "and a partridge in a pear tree."  Geez.  That's a list of a lot of things.

When I received my catalog in the mail, there was a "rub and sniff" for the scent on this candle.  When I received the candle in the mail, I discovered that the rub and sniff was pretty accurate on the cold scent.

To me, on cold smell this candle smells like it is confused.  Like it's not really sure which direction it wants to go.  It's a blend of everything and the result is just messy.

It is a very floral scent.  I don't know what they are referring to with the miracle flower because there are SO many flowers out there that carry that name.  To me, the main scent is a peony but there are also other floral scents there too.  It's a miss mash of flowers all fighting for your attention.  It also has a bit of a woodsy scent as an undertone along with the black pepper.  I can't help but wonder why is there black pepper in there?  It's like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.  It doesn't fit.

So now let's talk about my least favorite thing about this candle.  The packaging design.  It's just atrocious and gross.  I really hate it and let me explain why.

This candle is in the same 1980's jar.  It's been painted white and not in a good way.  This white paint is on the outside of the jar and attracts EVERYTHING.  It is easily soiled and since it is like flat wall paint, if you try to wipe it off it is going to do nothing but make it worse.  The paint chips easily.  It's just a messy execution on the paint job.

THEN, they took the jar lid and painted the inside of it gold.  BARF.  It just really looks cheap, trashy and out of place.  The paint wasn't applied evenly so it's thick in some places and thin in others.  I obviously don't know if that is meant to be part of the aesthetic of the candle but it just looks like bad quality control or carelessness.

The design fits well with the two wick tumbler but just looks completely out of place on their apothecary jar.  Just no.

You can't put lipstick on a pig and expect it to be a dove.  The world doesn't work that way.

Ok... That's enough of my complaining about the jar design.  Let's move on to the burn and the scent release because that's probably what most people are looking for.

The burns that I did on this candle before deciding that it was time to review it really went without any serious problems.  I did add an Illuma-Lid on the second and rest of the burns because it took this candle four hours to pool out on the first burn.  As we all know, no pool = no scent.

I honestly expected to get zero scent release (or throw) from this candle so imagine my surprise when it did give up some scent during each burn.

The first burn was on a bookcase in the large area in my hallway.  I like to burn candles there because if they do have scent release, it can easily drift into the rest of my house.  Now this one didn't go that far, not even close, but while burning for the first time it did lightly scent the area in the hallway where it was burning once it had reached about 3/4 of the way in the pooling action.

The second through fifth burns were in my office.  I had the candle sitting a few feet away from me and did get an occasional glimpse of the floral smell... followed by that pepper.  If I walked out of the room and came back in, the scent was there.  Not "in your face" but subtle.

The last few burns were in the dining room and were the same exact result as the office.  The subtle scent stayed in the room though and never drifted out to any other parts of the house.

I'm not sure how I feel about all that.  Granted it is better than the last Yankee Candle that I reviewed that had zero scent throw all the way through and is one of the big reasons that I am quickly becoming disenchanted with this brand, but it isn't as fierce as it should be.  Yankee's scent throw is really missing in action and they really need to hire someone to find it.

My Final Thoughts and Will I Buy This Candle Again?

Well, like I said two seconds ago, this candle does have a very soft, subtle scent throw when burning.  The scent still smells messy and confused to me.  The black pepper doesn't belong and with the number of scent notes... that's just too much.  Take 9 colors of acrylic paint and mix them together and you get the same result.  It's mud.

The packaging is problematic and cheap looking.  Don't allow anything around that white paint or it will ick the outside of the jar up.  Wash your hands to get all of the oil and any dirt off of your skin or you'll have a dingy jar if you move the candle around a lot.  The gold paint on the lid... I'm not even going to revisit that.

I didn't say anything about it in the initial review but the saying on the back of the candle sounds like marketing propaganda to me.  Smoke blowing up a choice orifice of certain demographics that they are wanting to sell candles to.  I say that because with all of the movements that have been going on over the past couple of years, this is the first time Yankee has even mentioned anything like this and it shows up on the back of a candle that is $30.00 with no discount available and no proceeds going to any charity or movement organization.  All cold hard cash profit goes straight into their pocket.  I call BS marketing tactic on that one.  But hey, that's just my opinion and my observation.

Finally, will I buy it again?  I already did.  One jar and one two wick.  They aren't to burn though.  I will open them when they arrive to make sure they aren't broken, then I'm going to put them back into the packages and they will go in the top of the closet as part of my "no burn" collection.

I hope you got some good out of this review.  If you have this candle and have burned it, let me know your thoughts in the comments.  When I get back to making YouTube videos, I am going to do a video review on this one... because I think it deserves it.
